MSP Week 6

For most of the activities, we divided the work to fit our strengths. For example, I would type most things because I can type fast. With the money, we gave it to one organization because its the only organization that actually helped us. They gave us a friendly kind of feel when we called them which was appealing, and their mission statement fit us. I can't say I learned anything new about teamwork, I guess I got more experience. I expect a lot of people's emotions to come out when we donate the checks. I don't really know what I'll feel, somewhat accomplished and just an all around good feeling.

MSP Week 5

1. Where did you grow up, and how were things different then than they are today?

"I grew up in bay park, San Diego. One of the main differences is the technological advances and the ability to communicate with others."

2. What was an experience you had as a young person that changed your life? What lessons did you learn from that experience?

"Learning from a young age that you can control your anger and it doesn't have to control you."

3. How were money matters handled in your family growing up?

"My dad would give me my allowance for 6 months. And i was forced to budget that for 6 months. Taught me fiscal responsibility at a young age."

4. What are some lessons about money that a young person should know?

"Be careful what debt you get into and pay off your credit cards."

5. What are some organizations or causes you have supported or that you now support with your charitable giving and/or community service?


"I support surf Rider Foundation, and the San Diego zoological society."

6. What are some ways that charitable giving and community service have made your life better?


"There's worse things you can do than help others with your time and money"

7. What are some reasons you think it’s important that young people today get involved in charitable giving and community service?

8. If you could fix one serious problem in the world today, what wouldthat be? Explain why that area of concern is so important to you.

"The sense of entitlement in place of hard work. The notion that people get respect before hard work or success before hard work."

9. Tell me about a time when it felt like you made a meaningful differ- ence in someone’s life, or in your community, or in our country.

"Being able the affect the trajectory of young people's lives everyday." 

10. In your opinion, what are some secrets to a joyful and fulfilling life?

"You have the ability to control your own emotions and mood."

MSP, Week 4

We are learning about ways to determine if, as Ryan would say, "we love or not." I personally just like to call them and develop somewhat of a relationship with the company seeing as I'm donating money to them. It's some effort to evaluate, but I mean it doesn't really take too long on a financial level. On a personal level, it may take some time though.

MSP Week 3

This week we learned about tax returns and really just a lot of information. We learned the importance in looking at organization's tax returns from the IRS to determine how much they actually give to the cause. If an organization doesn't give much and keeps a majority of it, its not an organization you want to donate to. Its somewhat of a difficult process to find an organization. Especially for my category, Health Research and Education, because there are so many organizations who focus on the cure or research of a single disease such as breast cancer or HIV. If it comes down to it, we may have to choose a disease we want to see cured. We'll just stick to our mission statement.

Week 2, MSP

We did an activity where classmates bring in three items that are or represent something important to them. I didn't really learn about myself, but my classmates brought in some items that brought out some emotions. We also created a mission statement with our group. It was something along the lines of seeking to advance in medical research and techniques for our and future generations. Of course it was touched up and made nice. I put some effort into it because I think its a very important aspect of MSP. We're suppose to find some organizations that we can donate to that relates to our cause. I'm really not sure what to expect, possibly some positive and kind vibes, as it would make sense right? We're giving money they better be nice!

My 1st Experience

My first experience with the MAD (Make a Difference) cards was fun. I learned that I care about certain issues such as Health and Research. I had difficulty choosing and narrowing down it down to issues I truly  care about. I learned some of the things that make my peers feel sympathetic. I hope to further learn about giving away money and making a difference in others lives.
